Corporate governance for Indigenous corporations

What is this training about?

This workshop is designed to equip participants with general knowledge and skills for being a director of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation.

It covers a range of topics on governing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation and obligations under the CATSI Act Topics include:

  • the legal environment
  • governance
  • rule books
  • roles and responsibilities
  • members
  • stakeholders and accountability
  • corporation meetings
  • corporation reporting
  • decision making
  • the board's role in: strategy, resources, compliance, performance, risk, accountability and corporate culture
  • board processes and performance.

You can see there's a lot to cover in the 2-day timeframe of a workshop so you can expect that most topics will provide you with general understanding. We encourage you to dive deeper into individual topics through our range of single-topic workshops or talking with ORIC about a custom-designed workshop.

How are the workshops structured?

The workshops run for 2 days, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm each day.

You must attend both days of training to receive a certificate of attendance and be eligible to apply for our accredited courses. You will need support from your family, corporation and community for the time away from your usual duties and responsibilities.

How much does it cost?

ORIC covers the cost of providing the trainers, workshop materials, hiring the training venue and catering (morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea).

Some participants may be eligible to apply for assistance with travel costs to attend. ORIC does not pay sitting fees and cannot provide child care.

Who can attend?

Applications are welcome from all directors, future directors and members of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations registered under the CATSI Act. Applications from corporation employees will be considered where there is also a director from the same corporation attending.

When we look at applications, we prioritise directors of corporations (so make sure your corporation's records are up to date in the Register of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations) and people in the local area.

We expect

Participants to be committed to the training, have a sense of fun and be willing to work with and learn from others.

We also expect participants to show respect for themselves, other participants and the trainer.
