Travel support to attend training
We cover the costs of course delivery and materials for our workshops.
We may also be able to help with the costs of getting to and from a workshop that run for more than one day.
Eligibility for travel support
To be eligible to apply for travel support:
- you must be a director of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander corporation
- your corporation’s registered size must be small
- the workshop must be the closest available training to you while being more than 100 km away.
When you apply for travel support
You can apply for travel support after you've applied to attend a workshop. We’ll review your request and let you know what support we can provide. This may be full or partial support.
We consider:
- your role in the corporation – our priority is to support directors
- the distance between your home and the workshop
- your corporation’s size and ability to pay
- previous support given to your corporation
- the total value of the support you’re asking for
- the balance of cost and availability
- whether you’ve come to a workshop before, and whether you finished it or not
- the number of people asking for support.
If multiple people from your corporation are applying for support, we ask you to do group transport, like carpooling. Otherwise we may limit the number of people we can assist.
Types of travel
If we agree to cover the transport, it will be the most practical and least expensive form.
This could be:
- air
- ferry
- coach
- train
- bus
- a combination.
We only support private vehicles in some circumstances. If you’re applying for this, you must:
- explain why you couldn’t use public transport
- cover the cost difference between the cheaper form of transport and the private vehicle
- have a valid driver’s licence
- ensure your car is roadworthy, fully insured and registered.
Not included in travel costs
We do not pay for:
- sitting fees
- travel allowance
- breakfast
- dinner
- room service.
We cannot:
- buy another fare if you miss your departure time or lose your fare
- provide childcare
- provide travel assistance for family members or travel companions who are not taking part in the workshop.
Paying for travel
We may pre-book and pay for your travel by air, ferry, train or coach.
If we can’t pre-book, such as for a local bus, you’ll need to pay for the travel costs and claim a reimbursement from us:
- Before your workshop, write to us asking for agreement to reimburse travel.
- Keep your itinerary, invoices and receipts from traveling to and from the workshop.
- Send us proof of your travel.
We cannot process any claims without invoices or receipts.
We process claims for reimbursement after the workshop once we know you attended.
Claims may take up to 21 days to process.
Accommodation
If we agree to provide accommodation, it will be on a twin-share basis.
We cover the room only. You must:
- pay for your own food and drinks
- be able to provide a security bond to cover any personal expenses.
The security bond is usually a holding fee on a credit card. Sometimes providers accept cash. The holding fee is refunded to you if you don’t incur any personal expenses.
