Becoming a member
You can become a member of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation before or after the corporation registers.
You become a member once your name is added to the register of current members.
Member rights and duties
Being a member gives you a say in how a corporation:
- is run
- spends its money
- manages the services it provides.

Member eligibility
Each corporation is different and will have different rules on who is eligible to apply to be a member.
Check with the corporation what the rules are about membership before you apply.
Apply to be a member
Applications must be made in writing unless the corporation’s rule book states otherwise.
To apply to become a member of a corporation, ask the corporation for a copy of their application form.
Corporations must have this in their rule book.
Corporations can use our template application form or create their own.
Application responses
The directors will respond with their decision in writing. If you’re accepted, the directors will add your name to the member register.
If you use a sample form, you should adjust it to suit your corporation’s rules about membership.
