Deciding membership applications
Directors have the final decision on membership applications. This takes place at a directors’ meeting.
Reviewing applications
The directors check that:
- the applicant is eligible under the CATSI Act and corporation’s rules
- if accepted, the corporation’s membership will not breach its rule about the percentage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members.
Record this decision in the minutes of the directors’ meeting.
Applications before a general meeting
If there is a general meeting coming up, you can’t add new members to the register until after the meeting is done.
This means you can’t admit new members on the day of a general meeting, even if all of the existing members at the meeting agree.
Some corporations have an exemption from the Registrar and use a different process. Learn more about exemptions for admitting new members.
Accepting and rejecting membership applications
You can use our templates to tell someone if their application for membership has been approved or refused.
You can talk to us about issues to do with membership applications. We can’t intervene or overturn a director’s decision.
If a director accepts an application, they have 14 days to add the member’s name to the register of members.
