Leadership

The National Indigenous Australian Agency (NIAA) supports the implementation of the CATSI Act.

The NIAA provides advice and support to:

•    the Minister for Indigenous Australians, Senator the Hon Malarndirri McCarthy

•    the Prime Minister, on policy matters that affect the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander agencies

The NIAA publishes news and information for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on its Indigenous portal: indigenous.gov.au

Reconciliation Australia promotes and strengthens Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisations through its Indigenous Governance Program.

The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) is a national institution focused on the diverse history, cultures and heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia. It’s home to an extensive archive, a publishing arm, a family history unit and researcher.

The National Native Title Tribunal is an independent body established under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) to carry out functions and powers under the Act.

The Native Title Unit in the Attorney-General’s Department provides government with legal and legal-policy advice on native title.

The Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation assists with acquiring and managing rights and interests in land, salt water and fresh water Country through its grant program – Our Country Our Future.

Aboriginal Hostels Limited provides culturally safe and affordable accommodation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who need to be away from home for services and economic activities.

Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) supports the financial success and economic independence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. IBA provides:

  • home loans and financial services
  • business finance and partnerships
  • investment opportunities and advice.

The Office of Township Leasing supports the Executive Director to manage and administer Township Leases over Aboriginal communities – or ‘Townships’ in the NT.

Regulatory agencies

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) is a corporation, markets and financial services regulator. ASIC regulates corporations under the Australian Securities and Investments Commission Act 2001. It also has useful information and guides to help start and manage a business or company.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is the principal revenue collection agency of the Australian Government. The ATO has products to help you understand how tax laws apply to your corporation.

The Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) manages the application of bankruptcy and personal property securities laws. AFSA delivers:

  • personal insolvency and trustee services
  • regulation and enforcement
  • personal property securities services.

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) is the national regulator of charities. The ACNC registers corporations as charities and helps charities meet their obligations.
