Special administrator appointed to NSW Aboriginal housing corporation

Today, the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations, Anthony Beven placed the Hunter Valley Aboriginal Corporation under special administration.

The decision was made after a majority of the corporation’s directors wrote to the Registrar requesting the appointment. This followed an examination of the corporation’s books, completed in November 2008.

The corporation was established in 1993 and is based in Muswellbrook. It owns or manages 31 houses which provide rental accommodation for Indigenous families living in the area.

‘We hope that by placing the corporation under special administration it will be able to continue its operations without interruption,’ Mr Beven said.

Mr Beven said that the directors of the corporation asked for the appointment because they recognised the corporation required assistance to put its affairs back into good order following a period of internal problems.

During his appointment the special administrator will implement policy and procedures to improve the management of the housing and take steps to address the current rent arrears situation. In conjunction with the Registrar’s office the special administrator will also facilitate governance training for the members of the corporation.

Mr Peter McQuoid of PDM Consultancy has been appointed as the special administrator. He can be contacted on (07) 3103 3585 or 0435 018 879.
