The Registrar of Indigenous Corporations, Anthony Beven, has today placed the Kyburra Munda Yalga Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC under special administration.
Established in 2011, the corporation is based in Townsville, Queensland. The corporation manages the native title rights and interests of the Juru people. In July 2014 and June 2015 consent determinations in the Federal Court recognised the Juru people’s exclusive and non-exclusive native title between the Burdekin River and Bowen, including Cape Upstart and the Elliot River region.
The corporation manages income from a number of Indigenous land use agreements (ILUAs). It has 313 members located throughout North Queensland.
Recently the corporation has been beset by a number of disputes both among the Juru people and with third parties. In particular, there have been high-profile disputes around the use of land at Elliot River, and other disputes that have resulted in litigation against the corporation.
‘Kyburra is currently facing many complex issues, and despite the passionate leadership and good work of its directors, the corporation requires external assistance’, said Mr Beven. ‘The special administrators will assist the Juru people and their native title corporation through this difficult period and then return the corporation to its members.’
The Registrar has appointed Gerry Mier and Tony Jonsson from the Cairns-based firm, Grant Thornton, as special administrators until 19 February 2018.
