ORIC yearbook highlights better Indigenous corporation compliance

The Australian Government today welcomed the 2013-14 yearbook from the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC), highlighting the significant progress in strengthening corporate compliance.
Indigenous Affairs Minister, Senator Nigel Scullion, said the yearbook underlines the Registrar's significant progress in strengthening corporate governance and the role it plays in bolstering accountability of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations.
"Under the changes to compliance and corporate governance structure introduced this year, the Government is ensuring there are more robust and accountable services being delivered to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people," Minister Scullion said.
"I am also very pleased to see that this is the fourth consecutive year where compliance rates have been above 95 per cent.
"The yearbook also highlights over 2,000 corporations lodged their annual reports, the highest number of corporations in 36 years.
"ORIC will continue to play an important role in Indigenous corporation compliance as the Australian Government looks to foster a new engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through the Indigenous Advancement Strategy."
The Indigenous Advancement Strategy consolidates Indigenous policies and programmes making it easier for organisations delivering local services.
"I believe we have a once in a generation opportunity to change the way government, service providers and communities can work together to make a long-term difference to the lives of Indigenous families and children," Minister Scullion said.
