New online directory supports better governance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations

Wednesday, 21 October 2015

A new online service has been launched today to connect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations to independent company directors.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said Independentdirectory will connect corporations to highly skilled people and is an important step as this Government works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations to strengthen governance and capacity.

“Through the directory’s ‘find a candidate’ and ‘find a directorship’ sections, matches between potential directors and Indigenous corporations can be identified and connections made,” Minister Scullion said.

“This will lead to more robust and accountable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations and translates to more benefits for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on the ground.”

Independentdirectory is a joint project between the Commonwealth Government Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) and the Business Council of Australia’s (BCA) Indigenous Engagement Task Force.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations can advertise board vacancies or select from the candidates on the site.

Minister Scullion commended ORIC and the BCA for this initiative.

“This is a great example of Government partnering with the private sector to find new and innovative ways to strengthen governance and build capacity within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations”, Minister Scullion said.

“Independentdirectory builds on the Government’s strengthening of transparency and accountability through the Indigenous Advancement Strategy.”

Under these reforms, organisations receiving grants that exceed a total of $500,000 in any one year from the Indigenous Affairs portfolio will need to be incorporated under Commonwealth legislation and subject to the Commonwealth corporate regulator.

The Independentdirectory can be found on their website.
