Salary and conditions

$24-28 per hour

3 days, 21 hours per week (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday)

$24-28 an hour, pending experience and skills if applicable. This is however an entry level role; experience is not essential. The initial contract is 12 months with three-month probationary period. Possibility of continuing employment beyond initial 12-month contract. 

11% super on top of wage; 4 weeks annual leave (pro rata); flexible working arrangements can be negotiated.

Job description/overview

The Arts Centre Trainee position is a brilliant opportunity for entry-level employment in a dynamic Aboriginal arts organisation. The successful applicant will receive hands-on training and experience in the arts industry and in fundamental business skills. Arts programs and gallery tasks make up the majority of the work.

The trainee will work under the direction of the Baluk Arts Manager, Programs Coordinator and Gallery Coordinator to provide essential backup support to other staff, workshops facilitators and members.

They will contribute to the effectiveness of business operations by maintaining a clean and orderly shop front and arts program studio space; assisting with stock control and shipping; displaying and photographing artwork and the safe packing and shipping of consignments/sales. The Arts Centre Trainee will also provide back up and support for our arts programming. Here you will have the opportunity to work alongside some of the most talented Aboriginal artists in the country. The Arts Centre Trainee will be interacting and communicating with our large membership base of Aboriginal artists. Guidance, support and leadership will be provided by highly respected Elders here in the Southeast.

  • be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • identify as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • be accepted as such by their community as being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander

Applicants may be required to provide evidence to confirm that they are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Acceptable evidence includes:

  • a letter signed and executed by the chairperson of an incorporated Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander organisation confirming that they are recognised as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
  • a confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent form executed by an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Land Council or RAP.

As this is an entry level job in the arts industry, we will have an informal interview to select the right person for the role.
